guess who's back, back again?!

So I was able to secure a place to stay in Santa Barbara, I should be moving back into town by the 25th-26th of April. So what does that mean??? It means that The Workshop is on and popping again. So I hope to see you all there as soon as classes start back up! I want to start fresh again, I want to start expanding everyone's dance style, maybe start choreographing more. It's gonna be fun and exciting so stay tuned for the next installment beginning in May. Can't wait to come home! Peace...

Well I know I haven't been able to update this site like I've been wanting but it looks like I'm gonna be having a little more extra time. As most of you know I've recently relocated to San Diego, unfortunately that means no more Workshop sessions on Fridays but don't fret I won't be staying away. I'm hoping to come up every so often to hold master classes and I'm hoping to include some choreography soon. I'm hoping this move to S.D. will help expand my dancing style and I plan on bringing that "newness" back to S.B. with me. So keep a look out, I hope I can update this more often for you guys. So most of you have been coming to The Workshop for awhile now, and all of you are coming along very well so far. Some come to learn something new, some come to learn specific moves and there are those that come that want to truly be part of the b-boy culture. For those that want to be part of this wonderful culture and artform known as b-boying I thought I'd throw out some terminology out there.

B-BOY: (also B-GIRL) Those devoted to the culture and artfrom of b-boying or more commonly known as breakdancing. There is also a very distinct difference in the term b-boying as opposed to breakdancing. Breakdancing was a label given to the dance by the media in the early 80's when "breakdancing" was at it's supposed peak. B-boying goes as far back as the mid 70's. The term b-boy itself describes dancers who would dance and take it to the floor during the instrumental parts of music known as the "breaks". The term had originally come to existence by DJ Kool Herc although some people may claim that b-boy means beat-boy or bronx-boy since it was a dance that had originated in the Bronx. Some people can get lightly offended by being called breakdancers or having their dance called breakdancing. This is a lifestyle and true artform wheras breakdancing is just a dance. B-boying is one of the four elements of hip hop, the other three are Graffiti, D.J.'ing, and Rapping.

TOPROCK: The first element in the foundation of b-boying. Refers to the upright dancing, shuffling of feet etc. when entering a circle. Also may be refered to as an Uprock.

DOWNROCK: Refers to the actual dancing on the floor. This is the second element in the foundation of b-boying. Downrocks consist of going in circles on your hands and feet while shuffling back and forth. Also refered to as floorwork or shuffles. The basic move for downrocks is the six-step.

FREEZES: The act of posing after a set. Can be done using hands, head, elbows etc. Usually done as a punctuation to a set. This is the third element in the foundation of b-boying. Also referred to as Poses.

POWER- The fourth element in the b-boying foundation. When people think of breakdancing it's these moves that come to mind first. Power consists of spinning motions using the hands, head, elbows, back, and shoulders. Some common power moves are windmills, flares, and headspins.

CYPHER: The battle or circle, where a crowd congregates. May also be called a session either in b-boying or rapping.

SET: Choreographed or freestyle moves done in a sequence a set starts the moment you enter the circle and ends when you get out. Usually consists of a toprock, floowork, and a freeze.

CREW: Any number of b-boys/b-girls representing a specific group. Some of the best members may also branch out with other crew's best members to form a "super" crew, this usually occurs for large events especially international battles.

BATTLE: A showdown of two or more crews to see which has the better style. Battles can or are judged on cleanliness, technicality of moves/sets, choreography, difficulty and sometimes even crowd reaction.

These are just some of the basic terms I know there are plenty more. Maybe soon I'll put together a list of moves. I honestly didn't think this article would've been so long and detailed and I'm sure I may have left out a few things inadvertently so I aplogize if I did. I hope you all got something out of this and I hope you all now have a better understanding of these terms. If you want in on this awesome culture the best way is to dive headfirst, live it, love it, do it. peace

Well it's that time again... America's Best Dance Crew will be premiering on Jan.15th. It's gonna be a sick lineup. Team Quest (former members of the SICKSTEP Crew) have made it on there, watch out for those guys they come up with some crazy routines. Another crew to watch is Team Millenia they tried out last year but got cut, they're back and looking good. Keep it locked this season is gonna be awesome. I'll post demo vids of these crews soon. the vinyl battle

So here I am at work, dunno why I had to even show up. I'm bored outta my mind. Anyways I remembered something that ya'll would maybe enjoy. It's a small film that was made a few years back called The Vinyl Battle. I didn't "star" in it but I was in it. The story is about a radio D.J. played by Patton Oswalt (you'll know who he is when you see him) who has a constant battle with people living in the records/cd's. It start from the 70's I beleive and comes all the way to present day. I'm in the 80's scene and can be seen bustin my flares. I look way different than I do now, I was hella skinny. Go check it out, it's not a very long scene of me but hey it's something. For those of you who may not beleive me go and check out the credits which can be found on the site. That was a fun shoot as far as I can remember except for the fact I had to do take after take of flares. Most of the film was shot on a green screen set and everything was superimposed so I apologize if it seems kinda cheesy. Hey everyone! I don't know about you but I wish I could get more practice in, once a week sessions like ours are fun but to really get to that next level you've got to be constantly practicing and immersing yourself into the bboy scene. Now I'm sure most of you are like me, working full time jobs, so the chance to practice can be pretty tough. Now luckily for me I get studio time so I get to practice a little more. When I'm not practicing I'm usually looking through bboy websites, watching my bboy dvds and listening to music I usually will dance to during practices. Use whatever downtime you have to explore some of these resources. I have a whole list of links to bboy sites that you can check out. These are all for you. Check out videos, read other stories, join forums, you can even download some free tracks off of some of these sites. Use these tools to take you further. Bboying is not just about practicing, you need to be able to visualize the dance, understand its history and why we do some of the things we do. Soon as I put together my collection of dvds I'll be bringing them in for you all to borrow. I also had Jelani burn some cds if you haven't recieved one let me know. So there you go my point of the day, if you really want to get better faster then live the life of a bboy and use the tools and resources that have been provided.

Ok now it's time to get hella cheesy. With the Thanksgiving Holiday coming up in a few days I thought I'd take this time to give a shout out to everyone and everything I'm thankful for, hey it's my blog and I'll thank if I want to. First off, I gotta thank all of you that have come out and shown me love. This is something completely new to me, I've never taught dance ever in my life so I appreciate the patience and understanding. Nothing makes me happier now than coming to class and seeing all of you there, seeing the eagerness to learn. It's an awesome feeling. Thanks to all my friends and family that pushed me to pursue this venture. I never thought I was good enough to have my own class but I had other people who thought otherwise. Thanks to RHYTHM and Tamarr for giving me a chance and a venue to showcase my talents. This is just the beginning. With that said, I just want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Don't forget to be thankful for what you have, family,friends,homes, food to eat. We are all fortunate to have these things and yet it's these same things that are often overlooked and taken for granted. With just these recent fires here in SB let's remember that we could be in a worse postion than where we think we're at now. No session this Friday, we'll continue next week on December 5th. Well we made it through another session. Last nite's turn out was pretty good, seemed as though everyone had fun. I busted a few moves that I hadn't done in a long time and waking up this morning was a struggle! (lol) But I know it'll pay off. I hope you all had a good time last nite and I hope you all were able to take something new in again. I have to say for only going about a month and a half strong I am seeing so much progress. Even those that have just recently joined us are making excellent progress. Know that to truly get to that level you want to achieve it will take time and practice, and lots of it. Breakdancing by no means is easy, so don't be discouraged if you don't get something right away instead set your sights on that goal and work for it. Remember you'll get out of this class exactly how much you put in. Don't hold back and don't be scared to fall every once in awhile. You know the saying... if at first you don't succeed dust yourself off and try again. With the start of this new class and getting a bunch of you new folks in I thought I'd go over some of the essential items to have and bring with you if you really plan on getting down. Kneepads and elbow pads I would have to say are some of the best investments you are going to make. A lot of move require you to get down on your knees and you wanna make sure that you are comfortable when doing so. You can pick up a good set at Big 5 or any local sports outfitter, one thing to look for are more streamlined kneepads not so much the big bulky ones you might be used to seeing. Another good thing to look for when purchasing kneepads are the materials, kneepads with cloth on the outside are good if you are wearing shorts cause that still allows you to slide around if needed.

Now elbow pads aren't exactly required if you are just starting out but still a good investment to make. As you progress you will learn moves that require you to use your elbows on the ground, just the same as elbow pads you want to find a slimmer elbow pad with a cloth exterior for the same purpose listed above.

Now we'll move onto head protection. So you wanna spin on your head huh? Even if you aren't looking to do so having a good beanie or helmet will protect that precious dome of yours. Some moves will require you to use your head both literally and figuratively. Some freezes require you to place your head on the floor and using your head during windmills also helps get you that extra lift. A good beanie for starters should be fairly thick to absorb impact and cushion your head, then as you get better and as your heads becomes used to being on the ground you can move to s thinner beanie and eventually no beanie.

So there you have it, just a quick list of things that'll help you on your way to being an official breaker. Hope you all found this informative. Keep practicing and stay safe!

So in getting ready to move to our new home I figured that I should write about some of the gear that would be helpful to you when taking the class. Recently or actually last nite, I had someone come up to me asking what shoes would be appropriate to wear to my class. I guess that's a good a place if any to start cause afterall I can't expect you to bust out in some wingtips or boots. Short answer is running shoes. Running shoes make great dance shoes because one: they're lightweight and two: they're super comfortable. Breakdance involves a lot of footwork and having correct shoes just makes it easier on you. When looking for a running shoe there are a few key elements to look for... the shoes you have should be flexible, they should be able to provide you with good grip afterall you don't want to be slipping during a set, and they should have a slight curve, this allows your foot to move more naturally when busting a set.

Another kind of shoes to look for are flat bottomed shoes. These work well if your style is more freestyle/popping/gliding. Flat bottom shoes like Nike Dunks for example are great for gliding. That's my personal preference. Basically you just want a shoe that is comfortable regardless of which style of dance you do. Having the proper shoe will make a world of difference, and will most definetely help you out.

Well I officially got my contract from Tamarr. We are set to move into our new "home" next week Friday the 14th. One note... I will have to hike the price of my sessions to match Tamarr's class rate of $16 dollars to allow me to rent the spot for the 2 hours we usually have. Considering most of the classes that are held at RHYTHM are only an hour and a half it's still not a bad deal for us to be paying the new rate. Great news everybody!!!! Well I've been waiting for almost two months now and my dream is finally becoming realized! I started The Workshop just cause I wanted to start dancing again I wanted a venue that I could go to to start practicing my dancing. Some people had enough confidence to make me pursue teaching and that's where the idea was born. What had started as dancing in front of a sliding glass door with my buddy Van has started to become a full fledged dance session with other's who share my passion. For the past 3 weeks I've rented out the Goleta Valley Community Center put $60 dollars of my own money down to rent a room for two hours. I've been wanting to use The Rythym Dance and Fitness Studios center for awhile now and Tamarr and I have been trying to get my own classes started there. I'm happy to announce that I may be making the move to his studio by early next month! Scheduling conflicts have made it tough to get a slot in but thankfully things have worked out to where I don't have to change the day or the time. Keep it posted as I should have things figured out by the week of the 14th. To all of you that have come through so far thank you all for making it out, stick around cause this new venue is hot, plenty of room and plenty of mirrors to see what's going on. It's an exciting time.

Hey everybody... just so you know, in case you didn't already, there will be no session this coming Friday October 31st. We will resume on Friday November 7th. Also I just copy the photos onto disc so I should be uploading them shortly. Kinda on the same page, does anyone know how to do video editing?! If i had a computer I would defintely try to edit our sessions and post the videos up. So if you know anyone or if you yourself does any light video editing hit me up. Yo everybody good morning and happy Thursday! Just a reminder that we are again holding our Friday night session at The Workshop tomorrow October 24th. You should know the deal but in case you didn't: 7-9 p.m. at the Goleta Valley Community Center room 7 and it'll cost $10 a head. Also just a reminder that next Friday the
31st is Halloween so there will be no session. Hope to see you all there!

Now i know I've been lagging with the pics and video... my bad. I'm going to develop the pics today to put on disc and once i get that i'll post the pics, I promise! So stay posted keep it locked here for those pics. Peace

We Done Did It Again!

Well, another successful nite at The Workshop. Thanks to those that made it, and for those that missed out... well there's always next time! Tonight's class was a little smaller than our first session, but that allowed me more time to focus a little more one on one with everyone. I hope those of you that attended were able to take back a little more knowledge after tonight. We reviewed the basic uprock and a basic getdown. We worked a little on our shuffles and even got to practice some old school robot moves! lol. We were able to get a lot more footage and a few pics of some cool freezes.

So again for those that missed out, we're doing it again next week, so try to make it out. For those that did attend... spread the word, tell your friends, the more the merrier. Keep practicing and if you have any questions don't hesitate to call me, text me, email me, or message me from myspace, you get the idea! Well, I have to say this first session was a success! Thanks to everyone that came out. We had so much stuff going on, from learning basic 6-steps, to uprocks, how to get into windmills, box glides, heel-toes, etc. i'll post pics and vids soon, so stay tuned.

Oh before i forget... since we'll be doing quite a bit of dancing I want to make sure you guys are properly geared out. Now not all of these items are required but it would be extremely helpful to have on hand.

Bring good rubber shoes, running shoes are good. A sweater or light jacket for getting on the floor. A beanie or hat to protect that precious dome, towels cuz of course you will be sweating. Long sleeve shirts work great as well as opposed to bringing a sweater or jacket. Also a good thing to bring would be knee pads and elbow pads. Last and importantly not least bring a good attitude and an open mind, remember this is a dance class not a stand around and be shy class. Take this oppurtunity to practice what you want to practice to help perfect your style. We're all here to offer insight to each other, not only do we want to grow as individuals but we also want the group to grow together as well.

Well I'm finally doing it! After all the talking and planning, I'm officially starting "The Workshop". Just what is "The Workshop"? It's what I decided to name my little event. We'll be holding freestyle sessions at the Goleta Valley Community Center, in Old Town Goleta this Friday October 10th from 7-9 p.m. Come through, bring your friends. This will be the perfect oppurtunity and venue to practice your dancing. I'll also be offering one on one help for those that need it. So keep it posted here for more news, pictures and videos. This site will be updated as often as possible so check back often. See you all there!
